Company 13th Battalion, Frlance (A.I.F.) Yes, he was my mate and I was alongside of him when he was killed. I was at that time in the same company as he. We were in the front line of Messines at the time. It would be in the month of August, and Jim just been in the line about three days and was killed about five o”clock in the afternoon. I saw him just before our stretcher bearers came to his assistance and he was unconscious then, but died before they got him to our Company Headquarters, and I honestly know that he was buried outside of the Headquarters on the Battlefield of Messines. I have written and explained all to his cousin who is a Nun in a Convent in Albury, New South Wales. This was a wish however, I made to Jim before we went into the line.
P.S. I might state also that Jim was not buried in a Cemetery but he had a cross and his name on it, and his grave is on the Battlefield of Messines.
Written in London 8/5/1918.”
The letter has a few holes and is in a wooden frame and measures 33cm x 27cm
