Aust WWII Photo Gunner 2/1 Field Regt – WWI Veteran


WWII Photo Gunner 2/1 Field Regt NX30339 W J O’Neill – WWI Veteran 506 William James O’Neill enlisted in the first AIF 14 Sept 1914 and embarked with the 6th Light Horse Machine Gun Section. Unable to confirm his age at enlistment, stated as 21 years, but his WWII service would indicate that he put his age up from 15 years!  William O’Neill RTA on 8 Oct 1918 as a Bombardier with the 3rd Field Artillery.  William O’Neil enlisted in the 2/AIF 16 Feb 1942 and embarked for overseas with the 2/1 Field Regiment.  He discharged on 20 Jun 1942 aged 42 years.  His service records have been amalgamated on the National Archives and are currently unable to be accessed.  The post photo is inscribed:  “22/5/41 NX30339 W J O’Neill 2 Battery 2/1 Field Regiment AIF  R.A. Artillery abroad.  Just my picture taken while on leave at Tel Aviv, it is Australian beer Bill and very nice, Good luck and best wishes  WJO”.  William is in summer uniform with slouch hat and is wearing his WWI ribbon bar – WWI Star, War Medal and Victory Medal.
